Day 1 - Mind reader prompt

Mrs. Shelby's voice was so monotonous that it almost melded with the sound of her chalk on the board. The two sounds together making a perfect harmony of absolute boredom, which at times featured an occasional cough, pen click or rustle of paper.

The whole thing did nothing to keep Miley's mind engaged in the class. She was supposed to be learning about literature, but her mind couldn't be further from the exact topic at hand. The most entertaining thing that had happened since the start of the class had come at the furious scowl she had gotten when Kenneth had offered up Twilight as a "literature gem released in the Last Decade."

Miley had laughed alongside the others, enjoying the momentary reprieve from their teacher's droning voice.

Maybe it was a reflection o how little anything else had caught her attention that almost fifteen minutes later, Miley was still thinking about it. The whole premise of the books had never really landed with her. She couldn't get behind the idea of a moody vampire taking school over and over again. It was just so cliche when she had read it. The idea that someone that could: one live forever and two read minds would put themselves through being around teenagers for almost a hundred years was unfathomable. Miley could hardly stand to listen to the things her classmates deemed to say out loud, the diamonds they thought worthy of expressing amongst all the coal. The idea of being surrounded by those unfiltered thoughts constantly seemed like unbelievably dull life.

Now the idea of a mind reader was more versatile for a character. With this in mind, Miley pulled out her handy dandy notebook and turned to a new page. She was jotting down several things she had liked about a mind reader or a protagonist, along with some o the weaknesses that would come with it.

"a bother during exam seasons, that's for sure," Miley muttered, decimating her thumbnail as she pondered this.

Glancing about the class again, she returned to her previous thought. How on earth would that even work. The person would be surrounded by people almost constantly. At best, they would be able to hear at least 30 students plus a teacher and Ta. But, of course, this was depending on if their powers were limited to those closest to them. Up to hundreds in the school, if they weren't that limited.

Sharing her head, Miley let her eyes wander back to the window. She could barely restrain her shock at seeing the science club's window across the courtyard. But, unfortunately, the window was obscured by a thick black smock that was filling the whole room.

~~ Fire!!!~~~

Miley had barely thought it when the seat two desks to her right flew backwards as Charles Leon Jumped up and raced to pull the fire alarm.

~~ What the hell?~~

Miley was staring at Charles as his gaze caught hers. His eyes were wild even as the others in their class jumped up and ran out of the room in barely an organized jumble.

Miley followed along with the others out of the room and down the stairs. Heading to their class's meet-up point for emergencies, Miley twisted this way and tried to keep tabs on Charles. Spotting him settling in amongst the back of the line as they left. She turned to catch his eyes again, frowning as she caught sight of him ducking away as soon as their teacher marked him there.

Rushing after him, she caught his arm as they broke the treeline in the back path. Their view of the gathered students and firetrucks cut off by the tennis courts from where they were, leaving them entirely alone together. The look on his face when he turned to glare at her killed whatever it was Miley had been about to say.

"what?"

Miley froze when the guy she had been crushing on since freshmen year glared at her like that. His blonde bangs were hanging in his eyes instead of being pushed back like they usually were. The expression on his face was twisted with sheer disdain as he ripped his arm away from her grasp.

Swallowing hard, Miley glanced down at her now empty hand before letting it fall to her side, raising her eyes to meet his gaze. Miley's brow furrowed ever so slightly as she allowed him to continue to stare her down with that same angry expression. Then, rallying her courage, she cleared her throat enough to speak.

"Why did you pull the alarm?"

The look that crossed his face seemed to be filled with confusion and shock before settling into irritation. Charles' lips were pursed, and his brows were narrowing down over his eyes, giving his glare an even more furious look to it.

"You yelled "Fire"!"

Miley blinked in surprise at that, her stomach twisting as she thought back about what had happened. Miley had wanted to do many things in the seconds between seeing the Fire and the alarm going off. But she had been so shocked at seeing smoke that she knew she hadn't gotten more than a surprised inhalation out.

"No, I didn't..." she said, noticing how the shock seemed to seep more into that angry expression on that gorgeous face. Almost as if Charles knew what she was about to say. "But I did think it!"
